The Calgary Stampede might have been canceled by COVID-19 but the firework show must go on.

Starting Friday night, The Calgary Stampede will set off a bigger and more elaborate fireworks light show than ever before for the entire city of Calgary. Another show will go July 12.

Brad Dezotell, the president of Fireworks Spectacular said the plan is for the whole city to be able to see the firework display from anywhere.

“There is no viewing at the park only external viewing,” he said.

“But there is a great soundtrack and it will be streamed on radio and TV.”

The fireworks are intended to be fired higher in the sky so people around Calgary can see them.

Brad Dezotell, the president of Fireworks Spectacular outlines how the fireworks will work for Calgarians during stampede.

Calgarians need some Stampede spirit

Like most Calgarians, Christopher Riley was looking forward to the celebration. He said that the event was always a force that brings communities together.

“I am disappointed that we aren’t going to see the Stampede go forward this year,” he said.

“It is a festival that really brings out the best in Calgary, and showcases the true spirit of Calgarians.”

With social distancing, the week-long stampede celebration canceled and the Stampede park shut down. Calgarians don’t have a lot of options to celebrate.

Riley said it’s not about the partying, people need the spirit of Stampede.

“I think remembering that regardless of the event itself, the spirit of Stampede is what is needed more than ever,” he said.

“Finding new ways to bring people together, even when we are staying apart is vital to remind people that we are all in this together.”

The fireworks will be set off beginning at 11 p.m.
