And welcome once more to our F1 liveblog for the 2019 German Grand Prix. The talk this weekend was largely of the weather. Friday practice was run in extremely hot conditions – around 38C – and Ferrari were quickest in both sessions. Again on Saturday …

Hamilton held a commanding 35-second lead when he stopped to change on to the dry tyres. But the last corner of the Hockenheim circuit was still damp, and after it caught Leclerc out, the young Monegasque crashing from second, Hamilton hit the barriers too.

While Leclerc retired, Hamilton was able to limp back to the pit lane, falling back to fifth following a comical pit stop, before gaining two places to third. But then Nico Hulkenberg also crashed out at the final corner, resulting in a third safety car period.

Hamilton pitted a lap late leaving him way down the order. Running in 12th, Hamilton said: “How has it gone this bad?” “Copy that, Lewis,” came the reply from his engineer, Pete Bonnington. “That is something we are going to have to review.”

There were then huge cheers from the grandstands as Hamilton fell off the road again, spinning at the opening bend. He pitted for new tyres, dropping to last place. He would finish outside of the points, 11th of the 13 classified runners.

There were no such concerns for Verstappen, who kept his cool to win by more than seven seconds. Vettel, who had started from the back of the grid after his engine broke in qualifying, made several moves in the final laps to seal the runner-up spot.

“It was about trying not to make mistakes,” said Verstappen. “It feels amazing to win. You learn over the years. I was very happy with the whole performance.”

Stroll took fourth ahead of McLaren’s Carlos Sainz with the London-born Alexander Albon a career-best sixth. Lando Norris failed to finish following a gearbox issue.

Vettel added: “It was a long race. At some stage it felt never-ending. It was very tough with the conditions. I am just happy.

Thanks for joining me today…

…I’m going to have a lie down and try and get my head around that race. Daniil Kvyat is asked what the name of his daughter is. They haven’t decided. May I suggest Heidi? After Heidelberg? The wonderful town nearby? Stay tuned for Oliver Brown’s race report and some further analysis and reaction tomorrow.

I think the livery was kind of cool…

…having the operational team, including team principal, dress up in 50s garb can look a bit prattish when you have a weekend this bad.

Toto Wolff on Mercedes’ terrible day: “It shows you shouldn’t mess about with stuff.” Meaning the stupid fancy dress. Dead right.

— Richard Williams (@rwilliams1947)

Still, they have plenty of room for these types of days at the moment. But this makes Ferrari’s day yesterday look like a small setback.

Updated constructor standings

Good day for Toro Rosso (23 points!), Racing Point and McLaren. Baaaaad day for Renault.

Valtteri Bottas reacts to his retirement and error

I learned for sure a lot. I made a mistake myself. For sure the team told me to push harder. I was pushing as hard as I could to get to the podium. Obviously pushed too much. Maybe I should have stayed more calm and taken my time. Maybe if I didn’t try that hard i wouldn’t have reached the podium. These kinds of conditions it’s easy to make a mistake. Now it happened at the wrong time, the wrong corner, that’s it.

Toto Wolff reacts to both cars not finishing in the points

It doesn’t make it any easier if you have a day like this. I think we had a decent start…with good pace. Then obviously you add incidents, crashing out in tricky conditions, the wrong calls and this is where it all started to go wrong.

[on Hamilton’s crash]

That was unfortunate because crashing right at the entry of the pit lane, obviously you are not prepared. We made the wrong calls afterwards.

[on Bottas’s race ending crash]

Many others made the mistake. Leclerc crashed and many others crashed. Overall for us it was a bad day. Simply it cannot go much worse.

It’s shows that you shouldn’t fool around with stuff. It’s a day to learn.

Martin Brundle pointing out that there were a lot of them who had awful races

Leclerc, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Gasly, Hamilton in particular. How much pain will they all be feeling?

So, Bottas binned it…

…but let’s pretend that he managed to overtake Lance Stroll and keep third. He’d have been within 19 points of Lewis Hamilton, gaining 15 points in one round. Even fourth would have been decent. It’s a pretty low point for him, this. Can he bounce back from it?

Updated driver standings

Well, it looked good/bad/good at various points this weekend…

…and their drivers collided on track again. But it’s a double points finish anyway.

So, after “The Worst Grand Prix Ever” in France we have had three absolute blinders. Naturally.

Daniil Kvyat reacts to a superb podium

It was amazing to be back on the podium. Incredible with Toro Rosso after so many years to bring a podium to the team. The race was crazy. Finally I put everything together to get this podium. It was a horror movie with a bit of black comedy! It was an incredible rollercoaster, a bit like my whole career!

And he became a father last night as well! Not a bad weekend.

Vettel reacts to 20th to second wonder drive

It was a long race! At some stage it felt like never-ending. It was fun but very tough with the conditions. I am just happy. I don’t think there was a problem [with the turbo]. I stayed tidy for most of the race. It was a long one. Congratulations for Max, I think he drove superbly.

Verstappen reacts

It was amazing of course to win in the end. It was really tricky out there to make the right calls. You had to be focused. We pitted onto the slick tyres at the right moment. It was all about trying to not make too many mistakes. Tricky. You learn over the years. Very happy with the whole performance today.

It's fair to say Daniil Kvyat is quite happy…

…with his podium with Toro Rosso. I’m so pleased for him. So pleased. That’s a double podium finish for Honda-engined cars. Mercedes had a mare. An absolute mare.

Where to start with that top 10? Where to start with that race?

MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2019 GERMAN GRAND PRIX

Almost flawless. As others around him made mistakes, he made few, kept it going, his team made the right strategy calls. The legions of Dutch fans go to their feet to cheer their hero.

WHAT. A RACE.

Vettel second, Kvyat third. Brilliant!

FINAL LAP

Verstappen leads Vettel who leads Kvyat and Stroll! Sainz fifth! What a race this has been. Breathless. Brilliant. Error-strewn.

Lap 63 of 64 – Vettel up into second!

Kvyat the unlucky man this time but he couldn’t do anything about it. Brilliant driving from Vettel today. Verstappen probably too far up the road, though…

Lap 62 of 64 – Gasly has a crash….

Vettel goes up the inside! And he has Kvyat in his sights! These two have history! Gasly runs wide, he’s got a puncture somewhere…he’s collided with someone…it’s Albon! He just drives clean into the back of him on the straight…they both feinted to go the same way and that was that…

Lap 61 of 64 – Verstappen extends his lead…

…Vettel within DRS range of Stroll. Can Stroll hang on? DRS enable. He has a golden opportunity for it here…Stroll has another podium in his sights but this will be such a hard one for him to keep…

Bottas bins it…

Lap 60 of 64 – Verstappen leads Kvyat by 1.4s

Verstappen backs the pack RIGHT up and bolts. He keeps his lead…but he has to keep it for five laps. Can Sainz claim a podium? I wouldn’t be surprised if Vettel got a podium here. It’s so close out there at the moment. Vettel goes down the inside of Sainz! He had supreme pace on those tyres before the SC and he still does!

Albon goes past Gasly again! Gasly struggling today with pace. Not for the first time.

Yes, that’s a top 10 we can all get behind. Wonder if that spin will have any effect on Bottas’s contract negotiations with Mercedes. To be fair, Hamilton has made more errors than he has. Safety car still out. Might have a final three or four lap shoot out at the end. Verstappen’s lead will be eroded. Has Kvyat got fresher tyres?

BOTTAS IS OUT OF THE RACE

HE SPINS AT THE FIRST TURN AND UNLIKE HAMILTON DOES GO INTO THE BARRIERS! OH NO. HE WAS GOING TO MAKE AT LEAST 12 POINTS ON HAMILTON HERE. BUT HE’S BOTTLED IT.

Lap 56 of 64 – Verstappen leads by 10 seconds

Has he made a single error all day? I can’t remember one. Vettel, the quickest man out there, is past Alex Albon for sixth. He’s having a fairly tidy race, actually. Grosjean and Magnussen touch wheels into the hairpin. Not again! Classic Haas.

LAP 56/64The two Haas cars come together as they battle for a points finish 🙈No damage seemingly done, with Romain Grosjean getting the better of the tussle 🇩🇪

— Formula 1 (@F1)

Lap 55 of 64 – It's a shame this race has to end…

Kvyat looking VERY good for a podium here. Stroll just clinging on to third. Bottas hasn’t quite got the pace at the moment, close though he is.

Lap 54 of 64 – Verstappen extends his lead…

…Hamilton in dead last and comes into the pits. Not a great race for him. May as well have put it into the barriers like Leclerc, earlier. Verstappen’s is looking on for victory here. Kvyat is closing the gap but not by much. Bottas within a second of Stroll but Sainz isn’t far behind either! Vettel flying….my head, my head, it hurts.

Lap 53 of 64 –  Hamilton spins!

Hamilton runs wide at the first turn, keeps it going though but his race is done anyway….he just gets it all round, does a 360 and very nearly runs into the barriers. He is human, after all. This is a BIG chance for Bottas to get his title hopes back on track.

…Bottas hunting down Stroll. No more rain expected. A nice downpour before the final few laps would be interesting, though.

Lap 50 of 64 – Kvyat on Stroll's rear wing…

Verstappen stays in the 18s but Bottas, Sainz and Giovinazzi are with him. Giovinazzi into the 1.17s! This is going to be a hectic race…Kvyat moves up to second…he’s nine seconds behind Verstappen. Has he the pace to challenge him? Doesn’t matter…a podium should be his target.

Lap 49 of 64 – This is the race of the year, no doubt…

…”How has it got this bad?” Hamilton asks. “That’s something we’re going to…review,” he is told.

Lap times tumbling. Verstappen goes into the 1.18s! Kvyat going well. Albon making his way up too. Toro Rosso have a set-up that is working in these conditions.

Not sure where it happened but he’s back out there.

Hamilton in 12th and not making any progress at the moment. That five second penalty has screwed him over.  Albon passes Gasly!

Lap 47 of 64 – Hamilton inherits the lead….

Raikkonen in second! Bottas comes in for soft tyres. Lance Stroll is up to fifth on the softs! A podium for the Canadian?! Hamilton then pits…a lap later than the others. Raikkonen could possibly lead this race if he stays out…he doesn’t.

Hamilton in for soft tyres…he has to stop for five seconds.

Hamilton comes out in P12 behind Romain Grosjean!

LANCE STROLL LEADS THE RACE! VERSTAPPEN RIGHT BEHIND.

Lap 46 of 64 – Race restarts…

Verstappen backs them up massively and then lets go…he keeps a healthy lead into the first couple of corners on those fresh tyres. Hamilton’s tyres look done, to be honest. He’s falling back massively…Albon is past at the hairpin! Not quite…Sainz then goes down the inside…no, Hamilton keeps third place! Albon runs wide and goes further back still…this race will end unfortunately but it’s a brilliant race.

Verstappen pits for slicks!

Devastation for Nico Hulkenberg

Could a podium have been his?

Devastated 💔 🇩🇪

— Formula 1 (@F1)

I think somebody is going to be brave and go onto slips. Safety car in this lap! Lance Stroll goes onto slicks!

No more rain expected.

Lap 43 of 64 – SC still out

But probably in this lap. This is a superb chance for McLaren – with Sainz left in the race – to make ground with Renault’s double retirement.

Looks like the SC is staying out for now. It looks quite close to slicks again but people have struggled and crashed in the final sector on those…

Lap 41 of 64 – SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED AGAIN

Who will stop? Verstappen does! He’ll lose track position…maybe. No he won’t. He’s out in first ahead…and onto inters. It’s a free stop, basically. But the smaller gap means he is susceptible to the undercut if and when the track dries enough for slicks. And that’s where the danger lies…but he might have extra life on the new inters to extend his lead enough.

Lap 40 of 64 – Hulkenberg in the barriers again at the final turn!

And it’s another SAFETY CAR. SURELY! Exactly the same way…understeered into the penultimate turn, onto the slippery stuff and and locks up, slides into the barriers…ouch. What a race he was having…

LAP 40/64Heartbreak for as he crashes into the barriers and can't recover 💔With a first F1 podium in sight, his race is over 🇩🇪

Lap 39 of 64 – Verstappen's lead up to nine seconds now…

…Hamilton’s pace is comparable. But quicker than Bottas. I think race pace on slicks at the end of the race will decide what happens here. Raikkonen runs wide and loses a bag of places. It’s that tricky place at the end of the lap where a few drivers have binned it.

Lap 38 of 64 – Hamilton gets past Hulkenberg at the hairpin…

FIVE SECOND TIME PENALTY FOR LEWIS HAMILTON. That’s for the pit lane incident. A bit of a setback but he can still win this.

Lap 33 of 64 – SAFETY CAR IN THIS LAP

That didn’t work out too badly for Hamilton, all in all, he lost track position but the SC was already coming out so the super long pit stop didn’t really cost him time so much as track position. He’s still in with a chance here. It will come down to being on the right tyres at the right time. We have just passed half-distance of the race…and the season.

Hamilton very nearly went into Charles Leclerc’s car. Hamilton came into the pit lane later then the latest point he should be able to.

Lap 29 of 64 – WE AREN'T EVEN HALF RACE DISTANCE YET!

Bottas leads…but he’s on medium slicks. He needs to stop. Verstappen second. Hulkenberg third…Bottas slides into the pit lane and nearly spins…oh my. What a race this is. What a test for the drivers. Still haven’t seen a replay for that Hamilton incident…

Oh man…

Leclerc was tip-toeing around the final sector….

AND NOW HAMILTON IS OFF! THE CROWD ALL CHEER! HE’S LOST PART OF HIS FRONT WING! THEY’RE NOT READY WITH ANOTHER FRONT WING! THE CROWD GO INTO RAPTURES!

It’s under the safety car, though…so perhaps won’t be as much time lost. CHAOS IN THE MERCEDES GARAGE! HE’S BEEN STATIONARY FOR 42 SECONDS…THEY DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TYRES…THIS IS COMEDIC! OH MY WORD….IT’S A 60 second pit stop…

Lap 28 of 64 – They have to bring Hamilton in…

…he tip toes around the final part of the lap under the VSC. He will also get a cheap stop. But how cheap?  VSC ends just as he comes in! Oh! That’s not great for him and it’s a slow stop…right front was slow.

LECLERC GOES INTO THE BARRIERS! HE’S OUT! HE’S DESPERATELY TRYING TO KEEP IT GOING.

Lap 27 of 64 – Norris out…

He has lost power. Lance Stroll spins on the slicks. Also on the mediums. WHY WOULD YOU PUT THEM ON THE MEDIUMS?! What madness. Leclerc going onto the soft tyres from second. Hamilton still leads. Leclerc still keeps second…there was a VSC when he stopped. Another cheap stop! This is hard to keep up with, I’ll be honest…

Lap 26 of 64 – Magnussen on slicks the quickest of the lot…

…Vettel not really finding much time on them. A flurry of cars come in for slicks. Some mediums, some soft. This is quite interesting…Bottas comes in and goes to the mediums. Verstappen is really struggling here on these mediums…there is just no traction.. He’s spin it and just about keeps it going! Wrong tyres. Why have they put him on those tyres? “Why didn’t you put me on the soft tyres?” he says.

Lap 25 of 64 – Hamilton's lead nearly NINE seconds now…

Verstappen still within a second of Bottas. Leclerc is closing on them, but not hugely. Magnussen’s lap times are not really that much better than the intermediates. Looks like the rain is getting a bit heavier at the end of the lap.

VERSTAPPEN PITS! What will it be? Slicks! And the mediums. Errr. I think that might be an error…he snakes it out of the pit lane.

Lap 24 of 64 – Vettel is going to pit for slick tyres

Bottas is falling back from Hamilton and into Verstappen’s grasp. The Red Bull has DRS…Leclerc’s lap times have stabilisied. He got two good laps from those inters but then they came right back to where he was before. Has that really worked that well for him?

Lap 23 of 64 – All eyes on Magnussen's sector times

It’s about a 0.8s off Hamilton in sector two. Hmmm. But comparable to Hulkenberg. Once the tyres have warmed up, though…it’s sector three that’s the wettest though.

LAP 24/64Those are slicks 😮 🇩🇪

Lap 22 of 64 – Hamilton quicker than Leclerc that time…

…not sure if Leclerc had traffic, Bottas makes an error and Verstappen is close. Leclerc is not that far behind them, four seconds behind. Rain in the pit lane, though. Not sure how heavy. Magnussen pits…for slicks? Yes! Soft tyres. This’ll be interesting…can he get round?!

Lap 19 of 64 – Sainz nearly into the wall…

He’s spun at the final turn and has fallen down to 15th, behind team-mate Norris. Leclerc within 12s of Hamilton now. Another two seconds out of the lead last lap. Rain incoming! That’ll be even better for Leclerc!

Lap 18 of 64 – Leclerc 3.2s quicker than Hamilton last time round!

Hamilton is only 15.4s ahead of him. If he can keep passing cars he’ll be with him in five or so laps. Mega. This could be mega. But the problem is we aren’t too far away from slick tyres. 1.27 is said to be the crossover for dry tyres. No new rain yet…

Let’s see how quick Leclerc’s first lap on these new inters is. He’s set the fastest sector two time. Sector three is his quickest but not the quickers overall. DRS enabled!

Lap 15 of 64 – VSC for Ricciardo's car…

…some more pit stops…who is going to pit? Leclerc? In for slicks? Surely not. Inters, I think. They could well be quicker…he had a free pit stop, though, so that makes sense. Nothing to lose in terms of track position, a little less to lose in terms of time.

Lap 14 of 64 – Team fine for Ferrari for the unsafe release

Feel like that’s always a more sensible solution than penalising the driver. I don’t know. Maybe you should dock the team points. More rain on the way? Perhaps.  Daniel Ricciardo’s engine has gone! Is this going to be another safety car? He’ll try and find a spot to park it…he’s trying to get back to the pits though…

Lap 12 of 64 – Hamilton steadily extending his lead

He’s a master in the wet but it isn’t especially wet on the racing line at the moment. Gasly fighting his way back, up to P14 and closing up on Kvyat.

Who will be the first to pit for slicks?

It’s too wet for that at the moment. But I am not sure by how much. It might be worth a Williams trying it? What do they have to lose?

Lap 11 of 64 – Hamilton's lead more than three seconds…

Verstappen just 1.4s behind Bottas. Leclerc a further seven seconds adrift. Then comes Hulkenberg five seconds behind in fifth. Hamilton has a pit stop in hand over him. Leclerc has a big moment on the kerbs going into the penultimate turn but keeps it going forwards! That has lost him a second or so.

It’s a bit of a shame that the safety car had to come out as it made the decision for everyone to pit for inters at the same time. Still, it would have happened anyway. Heavier rain in 10-15 minutes but a dry-ish line is appearing. Hmmm. Interesting!

He comes out in 16th.

Lap 7 of 64 – Hamilton leads Bottas

Raikkonen gets past Magnussen before the hairpin…but there’s a Ferrari lurking behind both of them! Hamilton’s lap times are very good. He’s still only two seconds ahead of Bottas, though. Magnussen fights back against Raikkonen towards the back of the lap, though and gets sixth back!

SAFETY CAR IN THIS LAP

Good stuff. Is the wet tyre going to be quicker? Or the inter? Unsafe release from Ferrari, Leclerc going right into Grosjean’s path in the pit lane. Will it be investigated? Yes. Will it be a penalty? Maybe.

Lap 3 of 64  – Hamilton stops

Perez just completely lost it on exit when applying the throttle, spun and hit the wall. Bottas comes in behind Hamilton but it’s a slow one for Bottas. The whole field will be on intermediates now. Again, it kind of makes a mockery of the decision to do those laps under the safety car…

Magnussen up to second behind the safety car as he didn’t stop…still a few drivers stay on wets. The interesting thing is how much quicker either tyre is at the moment.

Vettel pits for inters!

As does Albon! Wise move. Plenty more in for inters as well. Well, a few. Hamilton stays out on the wets…no he doesn’t…he comes in as well.

Damn you scheduled tweets…

A few of the potential roads to the podium. 🇩🇪

I predict with 100% certainty the podium will be filled with drivers on different strategies to these…

SAFETY CAR TO ENTER THE PITS AT THE END OF THIS LAP

AND IT’S A STANDING START! YES! Only a slight delay. Thanks, excellent stuff.

Onbaord with as the formation laps continue We have had confirmation that a regular, standing start will follow shortly! 🇩🇪

— Formula 1 (@F1)

Now, I love F1…

…but this is one of the worst things about the sport. The safety car goes round for ANOTHER lap. This is killing me. It’s taking the tension out of it. At least they aren’t using race laps up, though.

Has someone forgot to press a button?

They go round for another lap, the third formation lap or the second lap of the race? No. Ted Kravitz informs us that these laps do not count. Verstappen and Magnussen keen to get racing. It looks fine to me. It’s wet but it’s been raining. Just get on with it! Hamilton also keen.

So they continue around for another lap

I don’t really see why they have to wait for a dry line to emerge. Just get out there and get racing. It’ll emerge without the safety car. Does this count as the race start? They have started a second formation lap. But there is no refueling. Is this lap one? It should be. It’s down as the formation lap on the timing screens. Also, everyone on the wets. How strange.

The formation lap is go!

And they are off behind the safety car. Doesn’t look horrific out there. It’s wet, yes, but they have wet tyres to deal with that. And the skills also. It’s going to be difficult.

SC start confirmed

Pscsachchshahsahchsppphhhhhhh.

That’s the sound of the air being let out of the balloon. Again.

Talk of a SC start…

…it doesn’t really look that bad. It’s wet and tricky. But that’s what happens when it rains. Safety car starts generally take the life out of it all. They’ll go around for six or seven laps. Could still be a standing, start, though. Really hope it is.

Talk of the formation lap behind the safety car…but perhaps still a standing start.

15 MINS TO LIGHTS OUT ⏰The preliminaries have been dominated by one thing at Hockenheim – rain! ☔️ 🇩🇪

— Formula 1 (@F1)

Forecast is for rain for an hour or so into the grand prix and then easing up. Full wets, then, surely?

Max Verstappen excited but uncertain

I like to drive in the wet but nobody has driven with these new cars in the wet. It will be a bit tricky but we will find out in the race.

I have a feeling Hamilton might switch to the full wets

The 2 Mercs and Leclerc the only cars to come to the grid on inters. Rain getting slightly harder.

— Will Buxton (@wbuxtonofficial)

A lot of standing water out there, Antonio Giovinazzi says.

Time for Martin Brundle's grid walk…

Says it’s not too bad on the grid. But it wouldn’t be, compared to the rest of the track. He makes the point that a lot of these rookies have never driven an F1 car in the wet. And nobody has driven the 2019 spec cars in the rain, either.

“They [the drivers] are hesitant, like everyone. I think it’s going to be [between] the two types of tyres. We still need to be sensible. I think we need to survive to lap one first,” Renault Sports Cyril Abiteboul says. George Russell thinks it should be a normal standing start, not under the safety car.

Ted Kravitz speaks for all of us, I feel

Are you as excited as ? 😂Ted is pumped for a wet race here at the !

— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1)

Hamilton went to the grid on inters…

…and had a bit of a moment at the hairpin. Paul Di Resta thinks the inters are the tyres to be on because, as mentioned below, once a dry line starts to appear you can go for longer – and be quicker – on them. I don’t know, though. Depends on how much rain falls in the next 20 minutes or so. It doesn’t look massively heavy at the moment but is heavy enough.

A little (wet) wave, and to the grid we all go!

Sebastian Vettel's worst 12 months in F1

For more on Sebastian Vettel’s torment over the last year,

It's still raining…

…with 40 minutes to go until lights out. Verstappen a master in the wet. Hamilton a master in the wet. Both on the front row. Ah man, I was a little despondent after yesterday’s anti-climax of a qualifying session but I am so up for this one. So up for it.

Things I really want:

Non Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes on the podium
Hamilton vs Verstappen battle in the wet
Leclerc getting into contention
Chaos?

Looking at the drivers doing some warm-up laps on the way to the grid I’d be surprised if anyone was on inters. Looks like full wets to me.  Having said that, once 20 super-wide F1 cars get going a dry line soon appears.

Can't believe this was a year ago…

…the turning point in the championship. Don’t think there will be a turning point this season. Just a steady, merciless march to victory for Hamilton.

Hamilton's pole lap from yesterday

87 of these in his F1 career so far. 19 more than Michael Schumacher. How many more will he get?

Heavy rain NOW!

— Ben Hunt (@benjhunt)

Hope we don’t get a start behind the safety car. That’s my pet hate. They go round and round until there’s a dry line, then within two laps they all jump to slicks.

What can Vettel do from there? You would probably say the outside chances of him winning have increased (due to the inherent unpredictability in the wet) a but but, actually, his chances of claiming a top four spot have perhaps decreased. Ferrari’s pace advantage might not be so high over the other cars in the rain. We’ll see, though.  50 minutes to go, can’t see it being anything but an intermediates at best start. The rain is still falling.

80 minutes to go until lights out

And it’s definitely raining. The track is fairly soaked as the drivers go through their parade.

Good afternoon F1 fans! Will we have at wet race at Hockenheim?

And welcome once more to our F1 liveblog for the 2019 German Grand Prix. The talk this weekend was largely of the weather. Friday practice was run in extremely hot conditions – around 38C – and Ferrari were quickest in both sessions. Again on Saturday they were quickest in final practice before qualifying. The rain for the session did not materialise but reliability problems for the Italian team certainly did. At the worst possible time.

Sebastian Vettel, in his home grand prix, failed to post a time in Q1 after a turbo failure. He qualified 20th and last. Charles Leclerc, having looked like a very good bet for pole position and a shoo-in for the front row, had a fuel system problem in Q3, did not set a time and will start in 10th. Disaster would be a strong word for something that happened in an F1 race but it was the latest in a whole catalogue of errors and failures in 2019 for Ferrari.

Mercedes – or Lewis Hamilton specifically – filled the void they left, claiming another pole position. It was Hamilton’s 87th career pole in F1, extending his record further above the reaches of anyone else. Max Verstappen put in another super lap to claim second, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who had a bit of a middling qualifying.

Here’s what Hamilton said after the session:

“It’s not just unfortunate what happened to Ferrari today, but unfortunate for the sport too because it was building up to be a really exciting qualifying session. I don’t know how close it would have been in the end, but they were quick all weekend. I was really happy with my first lap in Q3; I just lost a little bit of time in Turn 8. Position on the grid is really important here, so I’m grateful to be starting from pole and hopefully I can try to stay out in front tomorrow.”

The race begins at 2.10pm BST and at the moment it looks like it will be at least a damp start, if not fully wet. Two Ferraris fighting through the field and perhaps some spicy action at the front. After two excellent grands prix, we could be in for another.
