Google Doodle honors James Naismith, the inventor of basketball

Googles latest doodle honors Dr. James Naismith, the physical educator and coach who invented the sport of basketball.

James Naismith: Google Doodle honors the inventor of basketball USA TODAY.

The animated Google logo features Naismith inside a gym holding a clipboard while two kids practice shooting balls inside a basket.

Naismith created the game using a soccer ball and two peach baskets. At its start, basketball used nine players and incorporated rules from sports such as field hockey, soccer and American football. 

After growing in popularity, it became an Olympic sport in 1936. Since then, it has introduced the world to legendary hoops stars from Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan to LeBron James.

In 1959, the was incorporated.
