So . . . are the Ottawa Senators good?

That’s probably the thought running through hockey minds after the team handed the Maple Leafs a 5-3 loss in the first installment of the 2021 season’s Battle of Ontario.

It had been 310 days since the Senators last played an NHL game; they were not invited to summer bubble hockey. It had been 314 days since the Senators won a hockey game — a 2-1 overtime decision over the Sharks on March 7. It had been 316 days since the squad won in regulation, a 4-3 triumph over the Islanders, and it had been 323 days since they put at least five goals past the opposition netminder.

Needless to say, it has been a while for a lot of good things in Ottawa. Maybe it was the new 2-D logo and jerseys? Maybe it was just that it was the opener? Regardless, the Senators didn’t show much rust on Friday night and put the rest of the North Division on notice.

Ottawa came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits before punching in three consecutive goals. Derek Stepan and Austin Watson, both making their Sens debuts, had goals, as did Thomas Chabot, Brady Tkachuk and Chris Tierney. Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, Josh Norris and Nikita Zaitsev chipped in two assists each.

Offseason trade pickup Matt Murray backstopped the win with 20 saves on 23 shots and looked solid in net. Tim Stützle, the third overall pick in the October draft, made his NHL on his 19th birthday. In 12 minutes, 11 seconds of ice time, including just under 90 seconds on the power play, he had one shot and one hit.

The Maple Leafs’ Zach Hyman opened the scoring by knocking the puck out of mid-air — a la a baseball bunt — on the power play midway through the first. Alexander Kerfoot and John Tavares also netted goals for a Leafs team that saw 19 of its shot attempts blocked. But the offensive spurts were few and far between. , the Leafs had just five high-danger shots at 5v5 the entire game (zero in the final period); overall, they had 10 to the Senators’ 14 (10 at 5v5).

Frederik Anderson made 19 saves on 24 shots, and the Leafs were a tad manhandled in the physicality department; Ottawa threw 33 hits to Toronto’s 12.

Sporting News had all the action as the Senators and Leafs met in the first Battle of Ontario for 2021. They’ll meet up for Round 2 on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.

6:10 p.m. — Call him Jimmy.

Tim Stütle’s NHL nickname is “Jimmy” and sometimes “Jimmy Stü.” I’m told Tkachuk wanted to mess with his new teammate and roommate and started calling him Jimmy and it has now stuck with the players. Norris says, “Sometimes I forget his name is actually Tim.”
