‘WandaVision’: Who is Agatha Harkness?
On 2/19/21 at 5:04 AM EST
WandaVision has delighted in leaving viewers guessing as to what is going on, and Episode 7 was no exception. In the episode, it was revealed that their was another magical figure hidden in Westview, with Agnes (played by Kathryn Hahn) actually a classic Marvel character, Agatha Harkness.
Viewers watching WandaVision just for its may not be familiar with the powerful witch who was revealed to be the sinister force behind much of Westview’s going-on, but the character has existed in comic books since 1970.
Her appearance in the Disney+ not only has big implications for Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), but also might be the first hint that Marvel is ready to bring the Fantastic Four into their cinematic universe () after bringing the X-Men in earlier in the season with the ).
Who is Agatha Harkness in WandaVision?
Agatha Harkness was first introduced in the Fantastic Four comic books as the governess of Franklin Richards, the young son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman.
However, she was soon revealed to be a powerful witch, a member of a colony of spell-casters who lived in a town called New Salem, Colorado. In other versions of her origin story, meanwhile, she was actually a witch who had survived the original Salem witch trials.
Though the character began as a Fantastic Four character, she is best known for her association with Scarlet Witch, aka WandaVision’s Wanda.
Kathryn Hahn’s Agnes was revealed to be Agatha Harkness in ‘WandaVision’ Episode 7.
The fact that she seems to be a villain secretly controlling things in Westview may be a surprise to some Marvel fans, as in the comics books she is usually the teacher of Scarlet Witch, who tutors her in witchcraft.
However, the MCU seems to be skipping this and jumping right to paying tribute to the Avengers West Coast series, in which Agatha returns to Wanda after the birth of her children and the death of Vision (Paul Bettany).
In this comic book series, Agatha notably wipes Wanda’s memory after her children are revealed to be not real, but constructs created by a devil-like force known as Mephisto, which could be a plotline that WandaVision has up its sleeve for the last two episodes.
Then again, the MCU version of Agatha seems to be slightly different to the comics version. For one, she seems to be more of a villain, Hahn is much younger than the white-haired old woman the character is usually portrayed as, and the WandaVision version of the character is missing Ebony, a cat-like creature who is Agatha’s familiar and who can sense the presence of mystical beings—and can also transform into a giant panther.
As such, it seems that the MCU is going their own way with the character. However, her link to the Fantastic Four does open the door for that team to join the franchise, especially as upcoming movies like Doctor Strange 2 and look set to explore the multiverse of Marvel characters.
